COMING ATTRACTIONS Dr. Sketchy: Cowgirls
May 14, 7:30pm MAY 20th
A.J. Shanti recently kicked her musical career into high gear, having just completed her first European tour, and is continuing her tour of the United States this spring. She’s promoting her debut album “Baby Beau Blue”, a lyrically and instrumentally packed album containing themes of queer struggle and liberation, heartache, love, fun, and sex. Her live performances are raw and emotionally charged. She has been performing as a solo artist, but will begin to include the talents of a Croatian musician, Dora Benc, creating a rich and harmonious depth to her performances. A.J. grew up on Long Island, New York and spent a good part of her adult life in San Francisco where she finished college and embarked upon several professional endeavors (queer youth counselor, truck driver, etc.) until last year, when she decided to dive head first into her music. She has been enjoying all of the excitement, exhaustion, and liberation that proceeds the pursuit of one’s dreams. Jane Carver creates performances that blur the boundaries and cut to the heart. They are the love children of opera, musical theater, rock and roll, and a strange dream not quite remembered. They include Leda and the Swan (2005), I've Been Away (2007), The Old Dream (2007), Mutter (2008), The Spinster (2008) and Muse-Sick: The Corso Suite (2009). Heartmaker, a collection of songs, will be released Spring 2009. The Black Mondays drag performance troupe is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Their highly choreographed numbers, full of humor, social commentary, and heavy sex appeal have made them well known all across the Midwest and the world.
The troupe has shared the stage with several prestigious performers such as Sile Singleton, Katie Reider, Betty, and Jennifer Corday. In 2008, the troupe was named one of the worlds "top performance groups" by the International Drag King Extravaganza.
They have performed for the benefit of numerous charities and non-profit organizations such as Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Stop AIDS, Planned Parenthood, and Women Out Front. They have also performed at several college events at universities including the University of Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky University, Bowling Green State, and Miami University
